 .
   * by default pass the `-q never` option to smartmontools via the defaults
     file in /etc/default. This avoids that smartmontools exits with an error
     code if no device to monitor is found, e.g., due to them being attached
     behind a HBA or RAID controller.
     Administrators that would like to get an error in the service state and
     log for that case can simply edit the defaults file to change behavior.
